BIONET+ is proud to be sponsoring Cyclo Nord-Sud!
Cyclo Nord-Sud collects used bicycles (as well as bike parts, tools and accessories) and ships them to poor communities in Africa and Latin America where they serve as a means of transportation and a tool for generating income and escaping poverty.
Since its first collection in 1999, Cyclo Nord-Sud has shipped over 45 000 bicycles to Southern communities. There, they become invaluable development tools by improving people’s mobility as well as their access to services and resources. Concretely, this means that hundreds of children can now go to school more easily, giving them more time for studies; farmers can take up to 50 kg of their goods to the market in a single trip; and women, who are often responsible for carrying water and produce, can now accomplish those tasks much faster, while also lessening the risk of injuries. In developing countries, a bicycle is used by an average of five to ten people over 20 years.
Since its inception, Cyclo Nord-Sud has reached out to thousands of people, allowing them to achieve greater social justice, more equitable exchanges, and most of all, preserve their dignity.
This has been made possible thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who help Cyclo Nord-Sud collect some 4 000 bicycles all over Québec every year. And we must not forget, of course, the thousands of people who have chosen to give a second life to their bicycle by donating it instead of leaving it to rust in an alley or sending it to be disposed of as waste.
You can be part of the chain too! Donate a bicycle, become a member, get involved!
